This year, St John Ambulance are making 100 years of supporting people. As part of their work as one of the nation’s leading organisations committed to ‘helping young people to lead better lives, and support their local communities’.
Through support for young people, St John Ambulance enables young people to learn first aid, build confidence and gain important life skills through a vibrant range of youth programmes and activities.
To celebrate the centenary of the St John Cadets - the service which is aimed at those aged 11-17, teaching them first aid and life skills – a reception was held in Parliament, which I was very glad to be able to attend.
Whilst there, I got the chance to hear from meet a number of former and current Cadets, including Elliot! As well as discussing his work with St John Ambulance and how it’s helped him, he also showed me some of the basic lifesaving CPR skills and techniques, which I got to try out on one of the St John Ambulance dummies!
What this part of the event underlined was the invaluable work that the organisation does in teaching important skills that can be invaluable in emergencies, when there’s only a small window in which to seek medical assistance.
