The Prime Minister has today announced the biggest hospital building programme for a generation, and St Helier Hospital is among the first to benefit from this additional investment.
Approval has been given for a £500m project that will see St Helier get the refurbishment it needs, and a brand new major hospital being built locally to care for the sickest patients in our Borough.
This new hospital will bring together the adult emergency department and women & children’s services in one place, including emergency department, critical care, complex day case facilities, maternity and paediatrics services.
St Helier will also have the funds it needs to completely refurbish the old parts of the building so it can continue to provide excellent healthcare in a building fit for the modern world.
No more will we have to hear stories of ambulances carrying patients from the back to the front of the building because the lifts aren’t big enough for the beds!
I am delighted at this exciting news, and I know local residents will be to.
Since being selected, I have used my experience of working in the NHS, and together with Paul Scully MP pushed for the funding needed to deliver this improvement for St Helier and build a new hospital.
After years of inaction and empty words from opposition parties, I am pleased that the Conservative government has responded positively to me and Paul and recognised the need to invest in our local NHS.
